Where this stands
Autonomy and self-compassion research is well developed; claims about the intergenerational transmission of relationship patterns are supported but probabilistic, never deterministic.
Autonomous motivation is associated with better well-being than pressured or fear-driven motivation.
Children's expectations about relationships are shaped in part by the interparental dynamics they observe.
Chronic self-erasure in a relationship can be costly for both the person and the relationship.
Love begins with me.
If I shine, love flows into their lives.
What research suggests
Put these different research traditions together and a more nuanced picture appears.
What happens inside a person can influence how they function within relationships. Relationship dynamics become part of the environment children experience.
Children can learn through observation, but they also respond emotionally and cognitively to family dynamics.
Parenting, emotional regulation, attachment-related processes and other developmental factors may contribute to continuity across generations.
Some relationship patterns therefore can travel.
But
CAN IS NOT MUST.
A childhood pattern is an influence. It is not a sentence.
The complication
Children do not need to witness perfect relationships. Conflict itself is not automatically evidence of an unhealthy relationship.
What may matter is how conflict happens — and what happens afterward.
And potentially one of the most important things children can witness is something imperfect relationships inevitably require: REPAIR.
Stay or leave?
Nothing here shows that parents should stay together for their children, and nothing here shows that unhappy parents should separate for their children. Relevant factors may include:
So perhaps the more useful question is not:
Stay or leave?
It is:
What is the child actually learning and experiencing inside the relationship that exists?

The SKAILOP lens
Soul Hierarchy takes these psychological ideas and pushes them into a broader proposition.
Responsibility moves outward.
Not because one person is more valuable than another.
But because we participate in the environments other people experience.

You cannot control every outcome. You cannot guarantee what another person will learn from you. You cannot engineer your child's future. But you can ask what your own repeated choices are modelling. And perhaps that changes the meaning of putting yourself first. Not: “I matter more than you.” But: “I am responsible for what I bring into us.” That is the hierarchy. Not a hierarchy of love. A hierarchy of responsibility.
