Sunk Cost Fallacy

Now turn the lens on you.

Choose

The Reset Test

Write down four numbers — or four honest sentences. Only about the future.

  1. 01

    Future cost of staying

  2. 02

    Future benefit of staying

  3. 03

    Future cost of leaving

  4. 04

    Future benefit of leaving

What would I choose if I didn't need to justify yesterday?

Try this in real life

When you catch yourself saying 'but I've already put in so much':

  1. 01

Name the amount already spent — out loud, once.

  2. 02

    Set it aside as unrecoverable.

  3. 03

Decide again using only what happens from today forward.

Sunk cost doesn't mean leave. It means don't let the past be the reason you stay.

Transform

Before

I've invested too much to leave.

Aha

What I've already invested does not automatically determine what makes sense from this point forward.

After

I can honor my past without giving it ownership of my future.

What happened mattered. What I invested was real. And I am still allowed to choose again.

One last question

Maybe the hardest question isn't: “How much have I already given?”

“If the past could not be recovered either way, what would I choose next?”
