The evidence

What do we actually know?

“Confirmation bias” is often used as if it describes one simple mental error.

Research paints a more complicated picture.

Different studies examine different components:

  • information search,
  • evidence weighting,
  • memory,
  • belief updating,
  • metacognition,
  • and debiasing.

The strength of evidence is not identical across every component.

Information search

Relatively strong

People often show a preference for information consistent with existing attitudes, beliefs or behaviours.

Defense and accuracy motivations influence the strength of this tendency.

After an initial choice, subsequent evidence consistent with that choice may receive greater weight.

These findings come from controlled decision tasks and should not automatically be generalized to every complex real-life judgment.

Memory

Observed, but more methodologically nuanced

Recent work has found confirmation-consistent processing in memory-related tasks alongside search and evidence weighting.

Task reliability and effect strength vary; memory should not be reduced to “we remember only what confirms us.”

What research suggests

What research suggests.

Epistemic status: SKAILOP synthesis of multiple research lines

Research suggests that existing beliefs and choices can influence:

  • what information people prefer to encounter,
  • how subsequent evidence is weighted,
  • and potentially other components of information processing.

But these effects are neither universal nor identical across tasks.

A useful summary is:

  1. Prior belief

  2. Can influence information processing

  3. Which can strengthen the prior belief

This cycle is a SKAILOP synthesis of multiple research lines — not a single experimentally established universal mechanism.

Complications

But it's not that simple.

Confirmation bias may not be one simple thing

Different experimental tasks capture different aspects of confirmatory processing.

Berthet, Teovanović and de Gardelle examined information search, evidence weighting and memory recall across multiple behavioural tasks and found evidence suggesting some shared individual-difference factor.

At the same time, effects and reliability varied across tasks.

The field therefore should not be reduced to one universal mental switch called “confirmation bias.”

Confirmatory processing is not always irrational

Rollwage and Fleming challenge the assumption that every form of selective information processing is inherently maladaptive.

Their modelling suggests that confirmatory processing may sometimes perform adequately — or under specific conditions even advantageously — when confidence monitoring is efficient.

This does not mean: “Confirmation bias is good.”

It means the relationship between prior belief, confidence and evidence processing is more complex than the popular slogan suggests.

Context matters

Laboratory effects do not automatically tell us why a particular person interpreted a relationship, workplace event or life decision in a particular way.

Individual differences, task structure, available evidence, motivation and context can all matter.

Do not diagnose a real person with confirmation bias merely because their conclusion seems one-sided.

Debiasing

Can we do anything about it?

One influential debiasing approach is:

Consider the opposite.

In two experiments, participants induced to consider how an opposite outcome or interpretation could have occurred showed less biased social judgment than participants who were simply instructed to be fair and unbiased.

Important limitation

This does not establish a universal cure for confirmation bias. The studies involved specific social-judgment tasks.

SKAILOP translation

Instead of only asking: “Why might I be right?”

try adding: “What would the world look like if I were wrong?”

This is not therapy, and it is not guaranteed debiasing.

Measurement

Can SKAILOP tell how confirmation-biased you are?

No. And it shouldn't pretend to.

Berthet's 2021 review found that the measurement of stable individual differences in cognitive biases remains methodologically developing.

At the time of the review, reliable measures were available for some biases, while measures for others — including confirmation bias — required development or improvement.

The same paper reported empirical work showing that confirmation bias can be measured more reliably with improved methods.

So measurement is possible, but the science does not justify a simplistic personality-style score that claims to tell a visitor exactly how biased they are.

Limits

What this research does not prove.

The research does not show that:

  • every strong belief is confirmation bias
  • every negative interpretation is biased
  • positive interpretations are automatically healthier
  • intuition should always be ignored
  • contradictory evidence is automatically correct
  • all alternative explanations are equally probable
  • awareness alone removes confirmation bias
  • “consider the opposite” is a universal cure
  • one laboratory task can diagnose how a specific person reasons in relationships or daily life
  • people only remember information that confirms them

So what can we say?

So what can we say?

Existing beliefs and choices can influence what information people seek and how subsequent evidence is processed.

But rational thinking is not the absence of prior beliefs.

The harder skill is remaining capable of updating them.

The goal is not: Doubt everything.

It is: Know what would change your mind.
